Clarification
Alright folks there seems to be some confusion amongst players & DM alike.
Light and Shadow jutsus rely on knowledge and self-discipline on the path that leads to manipulating ying and yang within oneself and using your chakra to those guidelines. You cannot just sub another elemental jutsu with light or shadow, as it is completely different from the standard elements; also most of the light & shadow jutsu should be a status affect of some sort and with only a few being direct damage jutsu. Also most (not all) light and shadow jutsu should be limited to select clans or bloodlines as the techniques are rare.
Light and Shadow techniques and the ability itself is not an actual bloodline (and example of a bloodline would be the wood element). To further confuse some of you, light and shadow is not necessarily one of the 5 main naruto elements. Although, we won't get into that as really the elements and the way they work with one another for jutsus was never clarified by the creator himself.
The Shikamaru clan of Leaf is one such example. They guard the methods in which shadow binding techniques are implemented, but again it isn't a bloodline just because their clan is known for those jutsus (as is partially explained by the manga, and later by Masashi Kishimoto in interviews)
Hope that helps to clarify... if it didn't, don't worry because Naruto couldn't either .
In part, this touches upon a light or shadow user using one's surroundings to their advantage. Shikamaru can only use his shadow techniques if there are shadows present (at times he does create 'his own' by manipulating the physical environment to cause objects to cast or change their shadow length. Light users (similar to water users) are at a disadvantage if there is not a lot of their medium present (unless they can create their own, ex, Kisame can use water jutsus even without a strong presence of water).
Please don't confuse using light with being able to absorb the sun's energies into your chakra. That ability is a Sage-Class technique as is explained in Naruto Shippuden Manga 409). These are near impossible so don't expect to learn them (Jiraya couldnt perform the techniques without side effects).
